    • Not exactly news I know but I thought this was amusing:

On what inspires a composer, I read this in The Oxford Companion to Music. Rossini advising a young composer never to write his overture until the evening before the first performance:

'Nothing excites inspiration as necessity does; the presence of an anxious copyist and a despairing manager tearing out handfuls of hair is a great help. In Italy in my days all the managers were bald at thirty. I wrote the overture to Otello in a small room where the fiercest of managers had imprisoned me with nothing but a dish of macaroni and the threat that I should not leave the place alive until I had written the last note. The overture to the Gazza Ladra I wrote on the actual day of the first performance of that opera, under the guard of four scene-shifters who had orders to throw my manuscript out of the window sheet by sheet as I wrote it, to the waiting copyist - and if I didn't supply the manuscript then they were to throw me out myself.'
